With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the technological progress of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the world of work is rapidly changing.

There is a growing focus on how to conduct yourself online, whether this involves submitting applications, interviewing for jobs, or working in the virtual space once you have secured a job.

The tips and resources below provide some guidance on how to maximise your chances of finding a job during or after your studies, in light of this transforming and dynamic environment.

1. The importance of a well-written professional resume

A resume is a medium for advertising yourself to prospective employers. It is the first means to present your qualifications, skills, expertise, and past work experience to convince your audience that you are the best candidate for a job.

Therefore, the presentation of this written information is crucial, as it largely determines if you will advance to the next stage of the application process, which usually involves an invitation to interview.

2. How to prepare for a job interview

After you have submitted your resume, you may be invited to interview for a job. During the interview process, your prospective employers will ask you questions to ascertain if you are suitable for the work that you have applied to do.

It is an opportunity for them to get to know you better and for you to determine whether the job aligns with your interests, ambitions, and values. Your interview preparation and how you conduct yourself during the process will be instrumental to your success.

3. How to Ace Your Job interview over Zoom

As the world of work is changing and there is an increased focus on virtual engagement instead of in-person communication, your interviews will likely be conducted online.

This requires greater familiarity with online platforms such as Zoom and MicrosoftTeams to ensure that you can engage with your interviewers and answer questions as well as possible.

The Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance is located at the globally recognised University of Cape Town (UCT). The School is founded on three thematic pillars, which guide everything we do:

· democratic governance

· public policy and programme implementation

· sustainable development.

We perceive these three themes to be the most pertinent to Africa’s long-term prosperity and success. The School is guided by the legacy of Nelson Mandela, who fought for the values of non-racialism, non-sexism, social justice, and human dignity. The Mandela School is built on the African principle of Ubuntu: “A person is a person through other people.”

The Parliamentary Monitoring Group, an information service, was established in 1995 with the aim of providing a type of Hansard for the proceedings of the more than fifty South African Parliamentary Committees. This was because there is no official record publicly available of the committee proceedings - the engine room of Parliament - and this type of information is needed by social justice organisations to lobby the Parliament of South Africa on pieces of legislation, matters of democratic processes and parliamentary oversight of the executive. PMG continues to act as this important record still today.

PMG provides accurate, objective, and current information on all parliamentary committee proceedings in the form of detailed, unofficial minutes and documents and audio recordings of the meeting
